How to choose a scuba diving school that suits your needs?

Scuba diving is an incredibly enjoyable and safe sport to participate in and one that can be enjoyed no matter where you are in the world. The worlds dive sites offer a myriad of opportunities for underwater exploration with colorful reefs, ship wrecks and fascinating marine life to be enjoyed.

Learning to dive is relatively easy and with PADI (Professional Association of Dive instructors) you can achieve your Open Water Diver qualification in as little as three days. The world over you will find Scuba Diving Schools that all teach the same basic principals but in real terms are as varied as the dive sites you can enjoy.

It is important to pick a dive school that suits your needs and one that will guide you on a safe and enjoyable journey to the underwater world.

When it comes to choosing who to learn to dive with, safety should always be your first consideration. We highly recommend visiting several dive schools before you make your choice and see how you feel around the staff and instructors. Any reputable dive school will be more than happy to talk you through the course and show you their equipment before you book up and it is very wise to have a good look around before you make your choice. Always ask to look at the schools hire equipment, you may not understand how it all works on your first trip to a dive shop or school but you will immediately be able to tell if its in good condition, knowing how well a dive shop looks after its equipment will give you an excellent insight into how well you will be looked after. Don’t be fooled however by sun faded gear, this is quite normal as the sun, sand and sea has a bleaching effect on even the most up to date and high quality dive equipment.

Another important consideration is group size, especially if you are learning to dive in an area with limited visibility. If you are in a large group of students with only a couple of meters of visibility it is going to be very hard for your instructor to keep an eye on you. Quite a lot of dive schools these days understand the importance of a small group, which may make less economical sense for the school but in terms of safety and quality instruction, is a very important consideration. A group of four is an ideal number as this will give you far more one on one instruction and the opportunity to spend more time practicing in confined water and you will also spend a lot less time hanging around while you are waiting for other students to master their skills.

Find out how large the group you are going to be in will be before you book up and make sure you feel comfortable with your instructor. Every dive site is different and offers different diving conditions. Find out how long your instructor has been teaching in the location you will be learning in so you can be sure of getting the very best care and enjoyment possible. Don’t be afraid to ask questions both before, during and after your course. Every instructor remembers the first day they entered the fascinating underwater world and should be more than happy to give you the time you need to feel comfortable in this wonderful aquatic world, if they don’t then you need to choose a different place to make your first steps into the deep, before going on to enjoy a lifetime of underwater exploration.

At last, I can completed the redesign of my 1st-kohsamui.com site. I have intention to redesign this site since last year but never have time to do it. I have spent the last 2 days to finish and I am very happy with my work.

1st-kohsamui.com blog also need an update as it’s still using too old version of Word Press (2.2) which I have to do it manually. The update went through without any problem. I then add CommentLuv plugin to my blog and join the CommentLuv network. I am using CommentLuv for my Samui Art Gallery’s blog to start growing up my art painting community. I am getting many good friends via using CommentLuv such as Rick from RickLaPoint.com, Hesham from Famousbloggers.net. Having CommentLuv on my blog, I am now ready to rock and roll. Yeh!

By the way, please tell me what do you think about the new design of my site. Thank you.

The coastline extends for 1,600 kilometre along the Gulf of Thailand from the eastern to the southern region of Thailand. Depth reaches an average of 45 metres and a maximum of 86 metres.

The coral reefs on the eastern coastline are scattered along the eastern and northern parts of various islands which are free from strong currents and the monsoons. Corals reefs are generally found at an average depth of 8-metres, and a medium depth of 8 to 15 metres around the offshore islands. Most prefer a depth of 2.5 metres.

The islands of Koh Tao – Turtle Island, and Koh Nang Yuan offer experienced divers virtually year-round diving opportunities with the exception of the November-December monsoon season.

Koh Tao, a bean-shaped island, has 11 bays, beautiful beaches and crystal clear seas with an 8-km. long coral reef teeming with marine life. At dive sites just 1 km. from the island, you’ll be swimming in the midst of pelagics, barracudas, big-eyed jacks, tuna, giant travellys and the colourful clown fish. This proximity to the “underwater classrooms” for diving courses makes Koh Tao ideal for beginners.

The renowned diving site at Kong Hin Wong is adorned with huge sea fans, Cetmocella, sea whips and other soft corals.

Whale sharks are often spotted off Koh Hong Sai Daeng.

Hin Tung Ku and Kong Hin Khao are also interesting deep-sea diving sites, thanks to a myriad of marine animals and rare black coral.

HOW TO GET THERE

A 2.5 hours boat trip from Koh Pa-ngan to Koh Tao operates daily. The daily trip from Chumphon to Koh Tao takes 6 hours by ordinary boat and 2 hours by express boat.

Scenic Koh Nang Yuan is 15-minutes from Koh Tao.

ACCOMMODATION

Houses and resorts for tourists are available in every bay area, fully equipped with boats, cars and diving gear for rent.

The National Park extends over shoreline mangrove forest, underwater caves and up to 40 islands.

Tourists are permitted to visit caves where concessionaire swift nest collection is undertaken on some of the islands.

Fertile coral reefs abound in both deep and shallow seas, for instance the islands of Koh Rang Ka Chiu, Koh Charakae, Koh Ngarm Yai.

Koh Ngam Noi island features deep sea species such as gigantic soft corals and sea anemones. Black corals, Daisy Coral and sea anemone can be seen at Hin Lak Ngam.

Interconnected tunnel caves can be found at the islands of Koh Kalok and Koh Talu.

Other attractions include outstanding dive sites at the Koh Mattra, Koh Lawa and Koh Kula islands.

Pristine beaches at Koh Thong Lang and the vantage point at Khao Chao Mueang by the tip of Hat Sai Ri offers a picturesque view of Chumphon.

HOW TO GET THERE

Take the road from Amphoe Muang Chumphon (the city of Chumphon) to Pak Nam Chumphon for a distance of 21 kms. Travelling to the various islands is relatively easy and inexpensive as they are not far offshore. Local boats can be rented for a trip out to the diving sites.

ACCOMMODATION

Stay over in Amphoe Muang Chumphon (the city of Chumphon) or at the many resorts in Hat Sai Bi and Hat Thung Wua Laen, Mu Koh Chumphon National Park.

The natural splendour and mystical charm of sheer limestone cliffs with awe-inspiring stalagmites and stalactites characterise the landscape of the Mu Koh Ang Thong National Park.

The Park covers 42 picturesque islands with white sandy beaches, hidden lagoons, fertile coral reefs featuring sea anemones, soft corals and sponges.

Koh Wua Ta Lap island on which the Park headquarters is located has pristine white beaches.

Tham Bua Bok has fascinating stalagmites and stalactites and offers an exhilarating mountaintop vantage point.

Koh Thai Phlao and Koh Wua Kantang islands are also impressive dive sites while Koh Sam Sao island, with a stone bridge leading towards the sea, is another good coral site.

Koh Mae Koh island is famous for its astounding emerald inland lake surrounded by piercing limestone outcrops.

February to April is the best time to visit the National Park.

HOW TO GET THERE

Join a tour programme or rent a boat from Koh Samui island. Boats leave from Na Thon Pier and Bo Phut Pier at 08:30 hours and arrive at the archipelago after an 1 hour 30 minutes cruise.

ACCOMMODATION

The Park provides 6 houses on Koh Wua Ta Lap island at a rate of 400 to 1,000 Baht per night. A camping area is also available.

The National Park offers diverse attractions for all tastes ranging from lush forests, mountains with odd-shaped rock formations, gushing streams, waterfalls and an abundance of coral outcrops.

There are four waterfalls on the island, the largest being Than Sadet Waterfall which bears the the royal insignia of King Rama V carved into the rockface.

The island is known for its pristine beaches, particularly Hat Rin, said to be the longest beach and the best observation point for sunset and the full moon.

Paddle around Koh Taen Nai island and admire the surrounding coral reefs and caves.

GETTING THERE

TOURISM STAKEHOLDERS PURSUE ‘GREEN ISLAND’ STATUS FOR SAMUI ISLAND

The tropical island paradise of Koh Samui (Samui Island) is widely noted for its natural charm. It is the kingdom’s third largest island, and ranks among Thailand’s most popular tourist destinations. In 2007, the award-winning island welcomed 1,059,642 visitors — an increase of 2.82 per cent over the previous year.

With ever-growing pressures on its natural resources, the islanders, especially tourism industry stakeholders, have taken a pro-active stance and are leading the charge to restore environmental quality.

Spearheaded by the Koh Samui Tourism Promotion Association, the Thai Hotels Association Southeastern Chapter and Samui Spa Association, with the full support of provincial authorities, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports (MOTS) and the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), the “Green Island Project – Koh Samui” was officially launched on June 18, 2007. This three-phase conservation initiative aims to protect and preserve the environment in order to ensure long-term sustainability.

Described by its founding members as “an umbrella organization to network and encourage an environmentally aware mindset on Koh Samui,” project implementation will span a period of ten years. Projects in the initial phase are due for completion within three years.

When the Samui-based associations learnt about TAT’s “Seven Greens” environmental conservation pledge — one of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives being launched by the national tourism organization in 2009, they expressed keen interest. Representatives from the local trade associations advised TAT of plans to make Koh Samui, a ‘green island’ and indicated that supporters of the “Green Island Project” were planning to formally pledge support for the pilot project. Both parties were eager to explore possible synergy.

Members explained their rationale for pursuing the project in a founding statement: “We understand that we as humans affect the environment, but we believe this does not have to be destructive. It can be done in a balanced way, to preserve and even enhance the natural world around us.

“We encourage everyone to participate – individuals, businesses, local organizations, government, The Tourism Authority of Thailand, NGOs and even tourists to create awareness and work together, without judgment or prejudice. We encourage everyone on the island to make a contribution to reduce, recycle, re-use and become more aware of what a green jewel Samui still is.”

The founding members seek the active involvement and participation of all tourism stakeholders and volunteers in efforts to restore, rehabilitate, protect and preserve the natural environment, the cultural landscape, traditions and way of life. This includes state agencies, tourism operators, local communities, media representatives as well as visitors/tourists.

Each will play a designated role.

Prior to the official launch, Executive Director of the TAT Product Promotion Department, Ms Sasi-Apha Sukontarat, participated in the “Greening Koh Samui for Sustainable Tourism” conference — a consultative meeting and working session jointly hosted by the provincial authorities and trade associations.

The island community recognizes that in order to succeed in its endeavours, it needs to actively pursue sustainable tourism development.

“Expressed in the simplest terms, sustainable tourism development means making Samui Island a much nicer place for local residents. By doing so, the island naturally becomes a more attractive and appealing destination for tourists and visitors. This in turn generates socio-economic and other benefits for the local community. Furthermore, these benefits will be passed on to future generations,” Executive Director Sasi-Apha explains.

The priority is to focus on the key elements that are critical factors when it comes to marketing and promoting a destination — to ensure cleanliness and good hygiene; safety; customer satisfaction; and success in attracting repeat visitors.

The ‘Green Island Project — Koh Samui’ master plan will be an integrated plan incorporating joint state and private sector plans as well as the guidelines outlined in TAT’s Seven Greens corporate social responsibility project. Once drafted, the master plan will serve as a guideline for the conduct of activities by all parties involved.

To demonstrate unwavering commitment to the shared goals, on 18 June, the day of the official launch, H.E. Mr Weerasak Kowsurat, Thailand’s Minister of Tourism and Sports, and Mrs Phornsiri Manoharn, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, joined the founding members and project supporters as they pledged their support for the Green Island Project by signing a declaration.

This intent is reflected in a formal pledge. Individuals and organizations participating in the Green Island Project commit to the following guidelines.

With the establishment of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports (MOTS) in 2002, the new scope of work for Thailand’s national tourism organization now focuses exclusively on marketing and promoting destinations around Thailand and the promotion of the multi-billion baht Thai tourism industry, domestically and worldwide. This is achieved through the conduct of destination marketing campaigns, advertising and public relations, marketing and sales promotions, and participation in international travel trade shows.

In participating in the Green Island Project — Koh Samui, TAT is extending support in line with its marketing and PR mandate.

The MOTS’ Office of Tourism Development assumes duties and responsibilities related to the development of service standard for tourist attractions or sites and tourism products and services offered by the Thai tourism industry. This includes the support of standards for tour businesses and tour guides, in order to achieve sustainable tourism development and generate economic, social and cultural benefits for local communities and the country as a whole.

Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya province celebrates the anniversary of this ancient historical site being designated a UNESCO Cultural World Heritage Site in 1991 and will be hosting its annual Ayutthaya World Heritage and Red Cross Fair at the Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Historical Park, December 10 – 19, 2010.

Before the festivities begin,a Buddhist merit-making ceremony will be held at the Chao Sam Phraya National Museum to pay homage to the relics of Lord Buddha.

The annual Ayutthaya World Heritage and Red Cross Fair features a colourful programme of cultural highlights and entertainment activities that make for a perfect day out, or weekend, with family and friends.

Captivating presentations of Thai art and culture, cultural performances, live demonstrations of traditional Thai ways, the ever-popular floating market, and the food fair with its dazzling selection of popular Thai dishes and local fare — both savoury and sweet, never fail to attract a good crowd.

Lose track of time as you browse around a historical recreation of the timeless traditional marketplace of the Ayutthaya period. Visitors will exchange modern day currency for replicas of the traditional Phot Duang ancient coins used in exchange for food and desserts.

Folk music and folk song contests, such as the Community and Village Leaders’ Thai Country Song Contest, and local beauty pageants add to the festive ambience.

The fair is equally popular with local as well as international visitors because of the great variety of stalls participating at this local Red Cross fair. These offer a diverse selection of local village products and community crafts for which each of the 16 tambon, or sub-districts, of Ayutthaya province are known. These are promoted under the OTOP — “One Tambon One Product” label.

End the day with a grand light-and-sound performance staged at the Wat Mahathat temple site.

Light-and-sound show at Wat Mahathat

The light-and-sound show traces the history of the Ayutthaya kingdom and will be presented by 350 – 400 performers from Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Rajabhat University.

Formally known as Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, the ancient city of Ayutthaya, was founded in 1350 by King U-Thong and remained the capital city of the Kingdom of Siam for 417 years, (from 1350 to 1767). During this time, 33 kings of various Siamese dynasties reigned in Ayutthaya, each contributing to the the Kingdom’s many cultural treasures.

During its heyday, international trade flourished with Dutch, Portuguese, French, English, Chinese and Japanese sea-faring traders sailing up the Chao Phraya River, the River Of Kings, to this ancient capital. Ayutthaya was one of Asia’s most prosperous cities with a proliferation of magnificent temples, palaces and pavillions signifying its wealth and prosperity.

This impressive heritage has become the bedrock of Thai society and has shaped the Thai way of life as it exists today. With a culture and civilisation so outstanding and timeless, Ayutthaya was designated a UNESCO Cultural World Heritage Site on 13 December 1991.

The show will be offered twice a day on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and once a day on Monday to Thursday. Capacity: 2,500 seats per show

The opening ceremony for the Ayutthaya’s Kings, Their Power and Great Fame light-and-sound show at Wat Mahathat will be held on Friday, 10 December.

Phuket, December 3, 2010 — The 8th Phuket International Boat Show (PIMEX) is set to hit high with more than 6,000 participants from 50 countries expected at the event to be held during January 6 – 9, 2011, at the Royal Phuket Marina.

Now in its 8th year, PIMEX is a marine lifestyle showcase featuring luxury yachts, charter boats, marine equipment, and lifestyle products. Every year, it has attracted thousands of high-earning Bangkok residents (both Thai and expatriate), potential buyers from throughout the Asia-Pacific region, vacation and business visitors, hotel and resort management and buyers, boat builders and charterers, agents, and their clients.

With over 2,000 trade visitors, PIMEX has become the place to do boating business, according to the organisers Informa Yacht Group.

The event has helped position Phuket as the regional hub for marine events with its world-class facilities, easy accessibility via land, sea and air, extensive growth of infrastructure, a skilled English-proficient workforce, and of course its wide range of leisure destinations.”

Mr Andy Dowden, the Show Director said, “Phuket is the ‘hottest’ boating market in the region with a swelling expat population, booming tourism market, new resort developments, and more Thai nationals entering the leisure boat market every day.”

He added, “Phuket is a strategic base for the marine business with five marinas – some of the most modern in Asia, over 1,200 ‘resident’ yachts and over 300 international yachts and 40 superyachts visiting each year. All of this and an explosion in new multi-million dollar properties on the island confirms that Phuket has become the Asian playground for the wealthy – the ‘Monaco of the East’.”

The venue, Royal Phuket Marina, is a ‘working’ marina with first-class restaurants and bars perfect for networking.

The 2010 edition hosted over 35 yachts both sail and power from 20 to 80 metres. PIMEX 2011 will feature 2,500 square metres of air-conditioned display space adjacent to the marina basin with a new in-water area accommodating over 40 yachts, the largest in-water display of any boat show in Asia, says Mr Dowden.

Mr Dowden says that between 2009 and 2010, PIMEX contributed over THB 8 billion to Phuket’s marine leisure industry. PIMEX 2011 will be expanded to include exhibits of luxury automobiles from THB10 million and boats in excess of THB 600 million with buyers coming from all over the region, including Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Jakarta, and Hong Kong.

Top global brands, brokers, and marine service providers will join local builders in Phuket to showcase boats from 20 feet to over 100 feet — day boats, luxury cruisers, and yachts.

“PIMEX 2011 is shaping up to be the biggest and best yet; the range and number of boats on display is more than you will find anywhere else in Asia and this combined with the exhibitors in the Hall and the luxury car companies taking part this year, means that PIMEX 2011 is truly a lifestyle show like no other,” said Mr Dowden.

PIMEX is supported by the Tourism Authority of Thailand, Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau, and the Sports Authority of Thailand. Other sponsors include IndoChine and HeliCam.
