Big Buddha (Phra Yai), Koh Samui, Thailand

Big Buddha or Phra Yai in Thai language. The Thai’s most respectfulness 12-metre Tall Golden Statue of Lord Buddha was built in 1972 by the local society of Koh Samui, sitting on a high platform at the top of a wide staircase decorated with dragons, dominates the scene within Phra Yai Temple, located on the island’s Northern shore where’s the new pier to Koh Phangan and Koh Tao.

Most Thai visitors to Koh Samui will usually visit Big Buddha the first place. They will pray here, make offerings of fruit and flowers, rice and water, and burn three incense sticks. This is to ensure a happy and lucky visit and for life.

At the foot of the Buddha statue is a meditation centre and within the temple grounds is a market place where amulets and Buddhist and Brahmin religious souvenirs are sold alongside Tee-shirts, hats, and other secular items. Small Thai restaurants cater for every taste in the same area.

How to go to Big Buddha?

If you still be at your home, planing for holiday in Samui, Big Buddha beach is one of a good choice for a nice and pretty peaceful holiday. It’s about 10 minutes from Samui airport. And it’s just a walk away from every hotels along Big Buddha beach to the Lord Buddha statue.

If you stay in the hotel on Chaweng Beach or Lamai Beach or the other beaches of the island, you may easily visit Big Buddha by your own rental motorbike or by red car call “Song Taws”. The price for motorbike rental is between 150 – 250 Baht per day. The price for “Song Taws” from Chaweng beach to Big Buddha is approximately 80 baht on the day and 200 baht on the night (per person), will be more expensive if you come from the other beaches.

Big Buddha beach have an abundant of facilities and services along the main road such as the local Thai restaurants which offer good delicious Thai food, bank, ATM, tour services to the nearby island as Koh Phangan and Koh Tao and a fun nightlife, but the girlie bars are best avoided unless you are looking for part-time love.

  5. This would make for a fabulous vacation. The government in Thailand at present, is very stable. The beaches are gorgeous and yes the Buddhist take their shrines very seriously. Even if not of that faith this would be a cultural treat to say the least. We are ready to get a trip there now!

You’ll want to visit at least one of the main Buddhist temples when you’re going on holiday in Thailand to get a taste for the Thai culture. The Big Buddha in Koh Samui is definitely a must visit if you are there.
