Samui Night Life

Nightlife on an Island
Dance the Night Away
The nightlife on Samui is where you will find the heartbeat of the island. During the lazy afternoons you will see the night vendors on the island basking the day away, lounging in their salas and catnapping long into the early hours of the evening. And just as the sun drops into the Gulf of Siam, they rise to prepare themselves for the night ahead.
There are a myriad of open bars that begin to turn up the music upon the setting of the sun, usually around the 6:30 mark of each day. Being so close to the equator gives a yearly stability to when the nightlife usually begins, and systematically the partying begins every day, at about the same time. These open bars are the warm-up for the real entertainment that is about to begin.
The options are countless, but perhaps the best bet is to simply stroll the strip, popping into bars as you go, finding groups of fellow travellers making their way to the party as well. The Chaweng Beach Road strip is the best strolling area for such an evening’s activity.
Hotels and resorts sport live entertainment, bars such as Tropical Murphy’s and Coyote have their own nightly local bands as well, and the list goes on. The Q Bar, the Ice Bar, Zico’s Brazilian Grill & Bar, Legends and Billabong Surf Club are only a few of the possibilities that you might stop into for a quick drink, or to spend the evening jumping to the tunes they provide.
All this fun leads you up to the really big venues on the island. One of the most popular discos on the island is the Green Mango. Dancing starts 10 p.m. and lasts until the early hours of the morning. Often famous bands play at this venue such as Thailand’s famous Carabao, drawing in the crowds by the hundreds filling the large dance floor and surrounding streets with people of all ages, sweating and dancing to the tunes of Thailand. This open space is filled with 5 bars within, and perhaps another 20 small venues lining down the streets that enter to the Green Mango.
If your choice is Reggae, then has Samui got the place for you! The popular Reggae Pub in Chaweng, noted for its logo which shows the face of Bob Marley, is another club just on the other side of the Chaweng lake, and the live music that emanates from there is heard throughout the village of Chaweng.
It doesn’t end here…
Throughout the island there are new venues arising that have begun to diversify the locations of great nightly entertainment. Bars now offer Half-Moon and Full-Moon parties on the beaches of Lamai and Chaweng, Bo Phut and Bang Rak, to allow people the pleasures of experiencing these parties without having to travel to the sister island of Koh Phangan. Buddy’s Beer Bar, Bauhaus, and Nikki Beach in Lipa Noi are some of the newer entertainment locations that are starting to give Chaweng a run for it’s money when it comes to excellent entertainment. Nikki Beach caters to a specific crowd of the elite, and if you pop in here, you just might run into famous movie stars and musicians, some of whom live on Samui.
Traditional Thai Dancing? The Cabaret
There are now 3 main entertainment Cabarets on the island of Koh Samui. One in Lamai at the Banana Boat Bar, Christie’s Cabaret and Star Club in Chaweng, and the newest addition of Starz Cabaret in Chaweng. These nightly entertainment facilities parade the glamour, glitz, and comedy of the Ladyboy, Katoey, and Female Impersonators of Samui. Considered as an accepted way of life amongst the Thai people, people from every age are seen at these events, and quite often they are privately hired for functions such as birthday parties, anniversaries and other large functions where the entertainment is the highlight of the event. Remarkable costumes and fantastic choreography will stun you as you sit through this entertainment, and if your lucky, they may even choose you to join in with them on stage for some true Thai fun.
Live Music
The live music venues on Samui are as countless as the stars over the island, and you have to keep an ear to the ground to find out all that is happening during your stay. Advertising is mainly by word of mouth and small posters, so check in at your reception to find out the latest buzz.
The Beach Pub at Secret Garden has become one of South East Asia’s leading venues over the course of the past 7 years. Musicians, both pro and semi-pro have the chance to play stress free, on a wonderful beach, with other musicians from all over the world. If you’re a musician and are planning a visit to Thailand, come and join in on their festivities. They provide professional equipment, instruments and professional staff on the engineering side. These sessions take place every Sunday afternoon from 4p.m. until 8p.m. and usually attract a crowd of 2 to 3 hundred people.

A few of my friends have been and say the nightlife’s great. Hopefully I’ll get to visit at some point!
Nice travel story and beautiful photos!
is that women or men ?

I am expecting to include some more photos to this kind of posting.

Nightlife in Koh Samui, Thailand is simply fantastic! For those who like a bit of excitement, don’t miss the weekly night Thai boxing fights close to Chaweng Beach. Watching Thai boxing is a typical Thai cultural experience and it can be exciting and fun.
very good article. make me wanna visit those place.
Nice article i spent my birthday on this island last year, and ate dinner and had drink at some place at the top of the hill with a 270 view over the whole island truly perfect, Can’t remember the name…Q bar ? I think you mentioned it above.
@TravelHealth yes, it’s Q bar.
I heard about this place some time ago. I recently decided I was going to visit this place. I’m glad to say I have made plans to go.
I spent one of the greatest 3 days of my life on Koh Samui back in 1993. I “highly” recommend it. I don’t party like a rock star anymore but you can.
I loved how you narrated your experience in Koh Samui. It actually makes me want to go there and join in the fun music and presentations. I am also a fan of Reggae. Keep it up. This is really a nice blog.
Can you tell me more about the Kaffi Solon or Vokull or Veitingahusid? Thanks so much!
It is the best place in thailand. haweng Beach is definitely where the action is, full of eateries and dance moves. Samui’s most popular nightlife area. From classy air-conditioned places with imported DJ’s and loud, loud, sound systems, to outdoor venues featuring live Thai and foreign bands. If you need to chill out, before hitting the semi-index regular beach parties, try beach side dining.
I’ve the same question, are they men or women. Guys, sometimes something is too good to be true.
koh samui is THE place for night life. i had the best few nights of my life there a few years ago. the sand, the fire dancers, and the cheap red bull vodkas! if youre young (or young at heart) you need to visit this place!!

I am sorry for the repetitive messages. I am just trying to determine what is wrong with my grandpa and grandma’s system.
They love your site and attempted to post a couple of times.
They haven’t been able to see their comment, so they asked me to check.
Thank you for your patience.
Their names are Gaston and Marie
Sweet Soul Cafe is an institution on Samui and is located in the epicentre of Soi Green Mango. It’s popular with both locals and tourists alike and is probably the liveliest place in town. A full range of cocktails, shooters and beers are available and the staff members are all very friendly.
The best strolling area for such an evening’s activity.
Great article. Looks like there is plenty to do after a hard day’s sight seeing!
I finally decided to write a comment on your blog.
