SCUBA Diving and PADI Dive Courses in Koh Samui and Koh Tao
There are a great number of dive companies that are available on Samui, as well as within the surrounding areas, sporting the newest rental equipment that is rigorously maintained. Dive boats are most often fast speedboats which get to the dive sites ahead of other charter boats, and the trip can be enjoyed in luxury with air conditioned cabins providing gourmet dining. A few of the favourite sites within the Angthong national marine park are: Chumporn Pinnacles is one of the most challenging dive sites found around Samui Island where you find occasional strong currents in waters of depths 10-35 meters. The challenge in this site is offered by numerous fascinating submerged pinnacles where the highest of these rocks lie about 16 meters below the water surface. When diving off Chumporn, you get to swim with schools of barracuda, tuna and mackerel, as well as man-sized groupers and large pelagic fish.
The Southwest Pinnacles is another diving site off Samui Island where you find three rock formations ranging from 4-30 meters height below the surface. This provides for a series of short wall dives, while its tops have blankets of underwater plant life arranged in an array of numerous colours. When diving here, you may encounter leopard sharks and perhaps, an occasional whale shark.
The Samran Pinnacles off Samui Island is a more advanced dive site, as the water is deeper here, and the currents, stronger. The rocks found here are found below 12 meters of water and tends to attract large schools of fish, making diving more interspersing. Green Rock is a diving site off Samui Island where you get to swim through depths of 4-25 meters of large archways, caves, crevices and caverns. You get to see numerous fish when you go diving here too.
The White Rock off Samui Island offers you two submerged pinnacles to explore about 2 meters above the surface while extending about 18-22 meters underwater. The Sail Rock lies between the islands of Koh Tao and Phangan, on the north of Samui Island where the main attraction is a 15-metre, naturally formed underwater dive wall or chimney.
Ascending through the chimney to the surface makes diving interesting here. If you want the best of diving on Samui Island, then you have to go to Ang Thong National Marine Park with the many caves, tunnels and passageways you experience while diving.
The Abundance of marine life and the beauty of the coral reefs surrounding the islands have led Koh Tao to become one of the major dive sites in Thailand, attracting beginners and professionals alike. Samui Island has been referred to as the diver's paradise, with a plethora of diving courses, shops and sites, offered for both amateur and novice divers. The Angthong National marine Park boasts the word famous Turtle Island (Koh Tao), found about 70 km north of Samui Island, and has numerous diving sites located both in and around Koh Tao.
There are over 30 dive sites surrounding Koh Tao, most within close proximity to the island. The water is an average temperature of 28 degrees Celsius with few currents and dive site depths range from 10 – 40 plus meters, making diving enjoyable for all levels of divers, and for snorkelers alike.
Around Koh Tao a variety of marine life can be viewed: boxfish, banner fish, moray eels, scorpion fish, sea snakes, butterfly fish, sweet lips, groupers, barracuda, turtles, octopus, reef sharks, whale sharks, and much much more! Diving is possible year round with peak seasons tending to be around March, April and again from June to September. During these times visibility can reach up to 30 meters. The monsoon season in the Gulf of Thailand starts in November and goes until about January. Though it is typically rainy only in November, diving is still possible. Whale sharks, Minke Whales, pilot whales and Bruda Whales have been spotted around Koh Tao during these months.
Whale sharks also typically visit the island during the months of April and September, during their migrations to and from Australia. Although, over the last year they have been seen year round, from the shallows of King Kong to the deeper waters of Sail Rock and everywhere in between, including favourite spot – Shark Bay!
Chumphon pinnacle 11km North West of Koh Tao. Widely regarded as one of the best in the Gulf. One main huge granite pinnacle and a series of smaller ones rising from the botton at 36m to within 14m of the surface covered with anemones and their attendant clown fishes. Large shoals of great and cheveron baracuda, schools of trevally, bat fish, and large groupers are in abundance. Occasional spanish mackerel, lion and scorpion fish. If its whale sharks and manta rays you are looking for this is the place to be!
South West Pinnacle 13km South West of Koh Tao, depth ranging from 30m. A series of 7 pinnacles from an underwater mountain range, the largest peaks are within five meters of the surface and are covered with sea anenomies. At the lower edges of the site you will find whip coral and large gardens of sea fans. Home to meter long baracudas, along with huge groupers, black spotted snappers, bat fish, sweet lips and emperor fish. Another great spot for manta rays, leopard and whale sharks.
Shark Island 300m South West of Ao Leuk bay, Koh Tao. One of the most diverse sites in terms of marine life. This small granite peak rises out of the water, with a maximum depth of approx 24m. There are a huge variety of corals, sea fans and sea whips, covering these outstanding pinnacles. You can find blue spotted sting rays, scibbled file fish, harlequin sweet lips, puffa fish, groupers and trigger fish. This site often has strong currents so you can make an exciting drift dive here.
White Rock 1km off Siree Beach, Koh Tao. This site has a large coral garden between two distant granite pinnacles. The depth range between 26m and 5m, makes it suitable for every level of diver, with an abundance of white eyed moray eels, sting rays, and a large resident population of trigger fish. This site lends itself particularly well to night diving. Watch by torchlight as hunting baracuda seek out their dinner. Along with feather stars, hunting cone shell, sting rays, black spotted porkupine fish, sleeping parrot and rabbit fish, this site is also home to turtles.
Green Rock This fantastic site, with depths between 28m and 5m, offers swim throughs, bat fish, trigger pits, and an abundance of morish idols, banner fish, white eyed moray eels and occasional reef sharks.
Nang Yuang Pinnacle and Caves A fantastic pinnacle rises up from 18m and has an abundance of resident marine life. A crack runs through the pinnacle making a home for squirell fish, moray ells and bat fish. The top of the pinnacle is teaming with anenomes which create an incredible roof top home for thousands of anenome fish. Take a heading West to the caves to marvel at the cathederal type ceiling, and enjoy the wide variety of fish that call this magnificent place their home.
Twins Koh Tao / Koh Nang Yuan. Two main pinnacles and a smaller deeper pinnacle make this a perfect training site, as well as a great fun dive site with depth range from 18m to 5m. This site boasts a large number of shrimp and goby duo's, large groupers, blue ringed angel fish, yellow racoon butterfly fish, as well as wrass of many kinds. The yellow talled baracuda is also prevalent here.
Sail Rock Wall-diving the pinnacle to a depth of 40m mean that repeated dives at this site near Koh Phangan are never boring. Swim up a 3m wide chimney beginning at a depth of 17m up to its exit at 7m. The East side sites include Light House, a great place for spotting turtles, Hin Wong has stunning blue soft corals, and Laem Thian boasts connecting swim throughts and canyons, Ao Leuk Point has cornfield like areas of whip corals, You will see banded sea snakes, unicorn surgeon fish and the occasional black tip reef shark.
